Fantastic watch - beautiful and very well crafted
I have a Blue Dial AGL watch and am really very impressed. Quality abounds because the execution of this watch is incredibly well thought out. There are a lot of aviator type watches out there -Swiss and German military type watches - so there is a lot of competition but this watch beats them all in my opinion. Why? - the watch face is clear and clean and dramatic with the white numbers on the navy blue background. As another reviewer commented, the blue takes on different shades in the sunlight and it is gorgeous - people will notice this watch! The minute markers and thicker markers at every 5 minutes are on a raised angle that rims the flat face up to the crystal and creates a sense of depth especially as the second hand sweeps around as it is longer than the flat face below. The watch hands have that classic aviator/military shape and are dramatic. From the center of the watch, the first small part of the hour and minute hands are painted black and keeps attention towards reading the watch time. It truly works JUST FINE on the blue face but it would have been nice if instead of black it were painted the same blue color as the watch face. Those that order the watch with a black face will have this matched up then but again... this is NOT a detraction from the watch in blue. If I had to order all over again, I'd still purchase it in blue. The tail of the second hand is painted black and the pointed tip is red which is truly easy then for reading out to the second and even to 1/5th of a second (the hacking movement is soooo much more enjoyable because you truly can see it and use it to read time between seconds!). - domed crystal: very WWI-like and again it just works so well with this watch because the angle of the dome continues the flow of the shape of the watch case. There is a little magnification with the domed crystal and it makes the watch appear bigger than it is, too. - watch case: It is a thick case and I love it because of it's smooth brushed steel with an almost onion-dome shape that also is repeated with the winding crown. The bottom of the case is integrated well, also: many watches aren't crafted to be so seamless and have a lip that extends out breaking the flow of the case. Ferro has this perfect. Much of the writing is carved in relief on the bottom which is much more substantial that typical and more expensive then to complete than just etching into the metal as most competitors do. I just can't believe that each edition apparently is only 80 as noted on the back...for such a pretty watch, these will be exclusive. I doubt most wearing their Ferro watch will ever bump into another wearing one. Watch crown, as mentioned, evokes the shape of the watch case - and so it looks so very well thought out! I love how deep the ridges are in the crown - it offers a sure grip but isn't overly big like Chronoswiss. The "F" on the crown's face is raised and that also looks perfect. Movement: So the ETA 2824 is a standard movement and well-known. It isn't the fanciest movement but it IS ETA and not Sellita and let's remember that there are A LOT of watches at the $1000 to $3000 range that use this ETA movement. And then there is their quite beautiful/striking oscillating weight that yes was designed specifically for this watch in house: that is something not typical for watches especially at this price point! It is a brilliant design in black. The font on the weight is in rose gold and probably looks even more striking for those that purchased this watch with a bronze case. Watch Band: So I was disappointed that there is no option for a butterfly-type clasp. On the other hand, military style watches probably look more correct with a traditional buckle clasp. Quite surprising is the quality of the leather strap: it is thicker than expected and soft. The brown stain is so well painted onto the leather that you cannot see the seams fused together - it just looks like one thick chunky leather strap. The only "off note" for the watch is the buckle because it is polished rather than brushed like the watch case. Indeed, on the buckle, the Ferro "F" is etched in and that is brushed then. But that is opposite to how lettering appears on the crown and on the back of the case. It would have been more work but I wish the buckle was executed as brushed metal with the "F" polished raised just like on the crown. So this watch is my current daily wear. It looks much more expensive than it is and quality is such that it really is a great value purchase for this Swiss-made watch. I like the legibility and elegance of its presentation and in my opinion it makes for a better watch than the interesting chronometer with the Valjoux 7750 movement. How much do I love this watch? Enough to take my time to write this review as it is a shame there are no proper reviews that focus on the AGL series on the web/youtube. Ferro; HOME RUN! A+ watch!
AGL Blue Pilot
Very cool design that gets attention from many people. The watch dial is striking. The blue takes on many different shades depending on the lighting. This gives the watch different personalities. The hands are the correct pilot shape and have a nice two tone color to add interest. The red tip of the second hand also adds dimension to the watch. Very pleased thus far. The only criticism I can make is the brushed finishing between the lugs is a bit uneven. But, for the price, the benefits far outweigh the flaw. I would certainly recommend Ferro and Company to friends looking for a quality watch that is different than the typical pilot watch design.
I purchased the watch based off a YouTube recommendation and review. I was not let down, the quality and craftsmanship is superb.
