Pilot Collection Aviation Inspired Watches
A Time of Sacrifice and Technological Advancement
World War II was all at once a turbulent, terrifying and obviously history-altering period in our planet’s existence. It was a time when many of us came together, no matter our age, background or beliefs and sacrificed whatever we could towards the common goal of ending this terrible war as quickly as we possibly could.
It took nearly four years, but the Allies did just that, thereby restoring a sense of peace and order in the world that had not existed for some time.
This was also a time when we were pushed by necessity to innovate and to push forward with technological advances that would most likely have not come about nearly as quickly without the ongoing war. One of those areas of rapid innovation was within the realm of aviation. Fighter pilots were involved in World War I, but their planes looked and worked nothing like what the fighter pilots of World War II used.
Every piece of equipment that the pilots used was refined, engineered carefully and put to the ultimate test on a daily basis, and this includes what pilots wore on their bodies. For many reasons, these courageous pilots needed dependable watches so that they could coordinate their attacks and other movements. If someone was late, the entire operation could be put at risk. There were no dependable digital clocks in those days. That’s why the watches that the combat aviators wore were so vital to their success. Every second mattered, and every watch had to work.
Was the Stylish Look Purposeful?
One aspect of this rapid, necessary advancement in an overall sense was that aesthetics were not necessarily a priority. However, that doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen with quite a few of these innovations, watches among them. If you look at pilot watches from the era, you’ll see that they are incredibly stylish as well as easy to read and use. Why or how that happened is anyone’s guess, but the result is that we now get to enjoy that look as well.
